T-bird and Gmail

This is much for me as anyone else. Gmail is offering IMAP service now. This handy article is all about how to use Thunderbird to get the most out of that functionality. I intend to go back later and see about setting this up. Very nice.

Patching Oracle is inordinately difficult and complicated. The documentation is at times infuriating. The whole thing from start to finish is an affront to anyone who enjoys using technology. I love working with computers – and I hate this process. And it doesn’t even make sense. This is an insanely large corporation that charges absurd amounts for their product. I should be able to push a button and wait a few minutes for it to tell me that everything is done.

At the very least, I should not run into a problem, dig through the documentation and see something like “This is a known error – see such and such a note for help” and go to find that the note does not address my specific situation. Sure there is a fix – but absolutely no direction on where I go from there. More importantly – if it is a known issue, with a known fix, why was there no direction before I ran the patch so I could catch this before I was half way through and had to start over? Mind boggling.

Another known error (first one I hit) says to go so a certain directory and run a certain script before you start over again. Directory and script don’t exist. Nice. We pay how many hundreds of thousands and can’t get correct documentation? Argh.

So we went to Sea World and had a nice time. We were there for about 4 hours. We got home, and I went for a run. As I’m heading out – just before the half mile mark, I see another pair of those walking stick bugs. Either it was the very same pair I saw on Tuesday or there are more of them walking around. Bizarre. Need to look into it and see if I can find out what the deal is.

Having the annual pass for Sea World is nice because we don’t feel compelled to see everything. A friend went with us last time and was kind enough to buy us these big plastic cups that can be refilled for about a buck. Ingrid has a higher level of upgraded pass that includes parking. So even with lunch we probably spent right about 20 bucks. That’s pretty awesome.

We went to Shamu – pantheistic stuff aside, it was a pretty awesome show. Apparently it is some kind of vacation season or something in the UK because at least half of England was at Sea World today.

Seaworld Today

The girls had the day off school, and I have to work tomorrow – so I took today off. We are heading to Seaworld. (They’ve got the best deal for residents- for an extra $5 you can turn a one day ticket into one that lasts the rest of the year.) I’ve only been once so far so I’m looking forward to it. And it is relatively cool out for Orlando – should make it a nice day for walking around the park.

A Nice Ride Home

The other night I had a really great ride home. It started before I even got on my bike. I walked out of the building and there were just the most awesome cloud formations, lit up by the setting sun. They were really amazing and looked to be thousands of feet tall. I took a picture with my phone but it is horrid. Framed perfectly by the clouds, was the moon. I include the photo only to give the reader a rough idea of what I’m describing.

(You can click on the picture for a larger one. The white circle shaped blob is the moon.)

I admired the sky for a bit and then hopped on my bike. As I leave Crusade’s property I go past a good sized pond on Wycliffe’s property. First I saw a pair of turtles. I think they were working on making more turtles. And just past them a pair of small alligators were cruising along. I haven’t seen a gator in a while, and then I see two of them. They weren’t more than a few feet each, but it was still cool.

I kept on rolling, crossed a road and went up onto a trail that I use to get most of the rest of the way home. It’s asphalt and wide, so I use that instead of the sidewalk on the other side of the road. It keeps me off the road and I don’t have to worry about running people over myself. Anyway, as I go up onto the trail, I see a huge walking stick. I’ve never seen one like it. It was big and dark brown, and riding on its back was a much smaller tan walking stick. Yes, another bad photo to follow.

That was it, but what an eventful trip home. Very cool.

Imified

Do you use instant messaging? I do. In fact I have to be on it sometimes for work. It’s a nice way to talk with people without having to call or fill up the old inbox. I don’t think it can replace walking on over to someones desk – but it is handy when that level of interaction isn’t necessary or possible.

Well yesterday I ran across a site, imified which basically provides a set of plugins so that you can use your instant message client (that’d be pidgin for me) for all kinds of stuff. One cool thing I’ve already messed with is blogging through IM. Now – that doesn’t make a ton of sense when I’m sitting at a pc with an internet connection – but since I have an IM client on my phone – it opens up some nice possibilities. It is probably something I’ll use when I’m in Hungary.

What looks like a nice match up for this technology is Remember the Milk. I just signed up for RTM – so I’ll have to see if it works for me or not – but being able to use instant message with it makes it much more useful right off the bat. How did people function before the internet?

So apparently this was Discovery’s 35th flight. Everything went nicely and they are on their way to install the Harmony module on the space station. I waited until the countdown got down to about 4 minutes and then headed downstairs and outside.

There were a lot of puffy white clouds and so we didn’t see the shuttle until it was a ways up. There was a bigger cloud that blocked our view of the solid rocket booster separation. But it was still cool. There was quite a big crowd out there. This is the first launch that has happened while I was at work.

My team lead’s wife and son drove out to jetty park last night and camped out to watch the launch today. I want to do something like that myself. Every launch I’ve seen thus far has been from here in the Orlando area. Need to get up close for one.
