Modern Travel

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – I love living in the future. Last week I flew to Indianapolis for meetings on Thursday morning and was home before the kids got out of school on Friday afternoon. It was two – 1 hour hops each way. The last leg home was on a Boeing 757 and I had a seat just forward of the starboard wing and engine. I love the contrast of the engine so close and the ground so far away. So I dug out my phone ( radio off per FAA regs) and snapped a few shots. This is somewhere between Atlanta, GA and Orlando, FL. Nothing special but it looked very cool to me. Haven’t posted any of these in a long while. Clicking on the photo will take you to hi-res.
Here is the scoop: AFGHANISTAN (Oct. 21, 2008) An F/A-18 Hornet assigned to the “War Party” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 87 deploys flares before beginning a close air support mission supporting ground forces in Afghanistan. VFA-87 is assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). U.S. Navy photo by Lt. George Schmuke

Schmap Used A Photo Of Mine

This is not that big a deal – but it is mildly cool to me. A photo that I put on flickr from my trip to Hungary has been used as part of a tourism guide for Budapest. The site is called Schmap and they didn’t pay me or anything. It looks like they go through flickr (and other sites I would guess) looking for photos they might use and then asking permission to do so. I think they update things pretty frequently – so I have no idea how long it will be up there, but it’s fun to look at. The photo I took is in the top right corner – credited to ronpeckjr. It has the Chain Bridge in the foreground and the parliament building in the background. I haven’t looked at my photos from that trip in a while, but seeing them again makes me want to go back.

I’m guessing the green on the rotor tips comes from sparks as they strike sand. That’s what I’ve seen with helos anyway, could be wrong. If it’s not that- then my other guess is light reflecting on the white stripes on the end of the blades. UPDATE- Apparently their are lights on the tips of the blades. Never heard of that before- read about it in the following thread. http://www.airliners.net/discussions/military/read.main/80996/ Click on this little one to see the full size version.

Some of the pictures I took in Hungary are here on flickr.

More pictures taken by my friend Dave are in this Picassa web album.

It was really an awesome trip.

Nasa Pics

Nasa has moved the picture of the day stuff and that broke the google gadget that I had displaying the photos. So I’ve yanked that out. It’s too bad, because I kind of liked that, but I’m guessing it was pulling a lot of bandwidth or something. (Not just my site obviously- I don’t get that many visits, but if thousands of people had it installed, it would add up.)

I’ll keep my eyes open for something else interesting to put up over there.
